Affordable Accommodation in Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls has really in terms of tourism, which means that you can choose accommodation according to your taste and budget. In the past Livingstone only had exclusive luxury lodges, a small number of backpacker options and a handful of guesthouses and hotels, but today you have plenty to choose from.
It is good to know what your options are before you decide on which option to go with:
Victoria Falls Rest Camp is a good example of a centrally located, cost-effective accommodation option. The chalets are clean, comfortable and secure, ranging in sizes from small to family size. There are also tents for those who don’t mind ‘roughing it’ although with twin beds and ablution blocks, you don’t need to break all your survival skills out. The camp is in walking distance from all the attractions in Livingstone.
Another self-catering option that is not too expensive is Lokuthula Lodges (pronounced “Lock-oo-too-la”). Its name means “Place of Peace” and is located in a garden setting complete with elephant walking about. It is situated only 4km from Victoria Falls. This is a relatively upmarket accommodation option, with an affordable price, but does not really qualify as budget accommodation. It is value for money, considering there is a watering hole nearby and the game moves freely between the parks and the lodge – which means game viewing right on your doorstep. Lokuthula Lodge also has a restaurant on-site, a pool bar, and a three-tier swimming pool along with a children’s pool. There are also baby-sitting services!
If you are used to the travelling lifestyle then the Shoestring Backpackers is for you. Known fondly as the “nightlife of Victoria Falls”, this is not luxury accommodation but this option has a certain charm that you can only get in an establishment such as this. It is within walking distance from the major amenities, the rooms are small but clean and there is a communal kitchen and swimming pool which is a luxury in the summer heat.
Vic Falls Adventure Lodge is a hotel with 70 rooms, all en-suite. Fourteen of the hotels rooms have air-conditioning units while all rooms have fans. There are the usual amenities available with televisions in all the rooms. The Adventure Lodge is just 2km away from Victoria Falls.
With a range of different types of affordable accommodation on offer, there is no excuse not to visit this beautiful part of the world and experience the Victoria Falls.

Excerpt: The 1911-1916 Australian drought consisted of a series of droughts that affected various regions of Australia between the years of 1911 and 1916. Most of the dry spells during this period can be related to three El Niño events in 1911, 1913 and 1914, though rainfall deficiencies actually began in northern Australia before the first of these El Niños set in and did not ease in coastal districts of New South Wales until well after the last El Niño had firmly dissipated and trends toward very heavy rainfall developed in other areas of the continent. The years before the drought had generally been had satisfactory rainfall and impressive crop yields throughout most of the continent except Gippsland , coastal districts of New South Wales and southeastern Queensland where the rainfall deficiencies of the Federation Drought had never disappeared at any point during the decade of the 1900s.1911 At the beginning of the year, a strong La Niña event was producing heavy rain over eastern Australia. January was the wettest on record in Sydney, and February was a phenomenally wet month in Victoria and southwestern New South Wales, with places like Pooncarie on the lower Darling River recording 190 millimetres (7.5 in) for the month. Averaged over Victoria, February 1911 stands as the third-wettest month since 1885 after October 1975 and February 1973. Heavy monsoonal rain drenched Queensland throughout the summer. These months, however, were virtually rainless in the |
